*To reface an existing masonry fireplace, especially the old coal-burning size fireplaces found in historic homes. When used with a functional fireplace, you may also burn wood.

Cast Iron Surrounds CANNOT be used alone to create a wood, coal or gas fireplace as they are made simply of cast iron that would transfer heat to surrounding combustibles. Our cast iron surrounds have a nominal 38" x 38" outside dimension. The mantel should OVERLAP the surround, so a mantel with inside dimensions approx. 36" x 36" is ideal.

Cast Iron Firebox

Most cast surrounds are available with a cast iron firebox that bolts onto the rear. The cast iron firebox will disguise a deteriorated masonry fireplace, and also provides a damper that can be shut when the fireplace is not in operation, providing energy savings by reducing heat loss. You can burn wood or coal in the cast iron firebox.  Inside depth is 6", outside depth is 8-10" depending upon the model.

We also have a gas coal burner that fits inside the cast iron firebox. If your fireplace restoration plans include a conversion to gas then the cast iron firebox included with our surrounds may be the best answer for a great looking, functional makeover. When you order the cast iron surround, there's no charge to include the firebox with it (if one is available on the surround style you've chosen) but you'll have to tell us if you want it included. Click any surround style at right to view models available with the cast iron firebox.
